UNCG Spartan Jazz Collective In the Crown

In The Crown

UNCG’s collaborative faculty-student septet presents the music of multi-instrumentalist and composer Yusef Lateef! From Detroit, he made his name as the third wind voice in the sextet of brothers Nat and Cannonball Adderley, and was credited with over 60 albums as a leader. Lateef’s unique woodwind style on saxophones, oboe, flute, and many other non-Western instruments was perfectly suited to his several hundred original compositions. Spartan Jazz Collective presents Mr. Lateef’s music in a unique woodwind-heavy lineup – including oboe and flute! – that will leave you searching for more music by this unsung hero of American music.

Tickets are $12 Adults and $9 Seniors, Military, Students.

ABOUT THE CROWN

The Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program‘s philosophy of mentorship is embodied in the Spartan Jazz Collective. The SJC is a collaborative ensemble in which faculty members mentor a rotating cast of students in bandleading, arranging, and rehearsal technique, while focusing on the music of specific jazz artists. Each semester students are given the opportunity to learn from one or more world-class visiting guest artists through performances and clinics. Past guest artists have included Jimmy Cobb, the John Scofield Trio, Lee Konitz, Branford Marsalis, Terri Lyne Carrington, Dewey Redman, Christian McBride, and Ellis Marsalis among others.
