Miramar & Maritzaida: Bolero, Bohemia, & Beyond In the Crown

IN THE CROWN

Experience a powerful celebration of Latin romanticism and cultural revival as two bold voices in bolero music share the stage.

Miramar, led by the entrancing vocals of Rei Alvarez and Laura Ann Singh, and the lush arrangements of pianist Marlysse Simmons-Argandoña, has been hailed for “bringing bolero into the 21st century” (All About Jazz). With roots in Puerto Rico, Richmond, and Brooklyn, the group blends vintage elegance with contemporary spirit, earning praise from NPR, NBC News Latino, and World Music Central. Their performances—whether with rhythm sections or string ensembles—are as cinematic as they are heartfelt, and their discography spans acclaimed labels including Barbès, Daptone, and Ansonia Records.

Joining them is Maritzaida, a rising voice in Puerto Rico’s música bohemia revival. Accompanied by guitarist AJ Weibe, her intimate interpretations of boleros by Puerto Rican composers Sylvia Rexach and Tutti Umpierre have captivated audiences across festivals, radio, and film. Her 2024 album Alma Adentro: La Música de Sylvia Rexach y Tutti Umpierre, released on SideHustle Records, was named one of the Top 20 Albums in Puerto Rico by the Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular.

Together, Miramar and Maritzaida offer a night of timeless melodies, rich storytelling, and the enduring soul of bolero.

ABOUT THE CROWN

Miramar features the voice and compositions of native Puerto Rican Rei Alvarez alongside “la gran voz de la diva” Laura Ann Singh. Their “languid and heartbreaking vocals“ are supported by the evocative and dreamy arrangements of pianist and bandleader, Marlysse Simmons-Argandoña. Simmons and her husband Alvarez are longtime collaborators best known for their work with the pioneering salsa band Bio Ritmo. The core trio – Singh, Álvarez, and Simmons – is joined by a rotating all-star cast rhythm section based between Richmond, VA and Brooklyn, NY. The group also regularly collaborates and records with string quartets, chamber groups, and symphonies. Miramar “brings the bolero into the 21st century” (All About Jazz), and their recordings have been described as an “elegant invocation of heritage” (NPR’s All Things Considered), “lush and lyrical” (NBC News Latino), and “timelessly crafted” (World Music Central). They have been featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk, NYC’s GlobalFEST, Lincoln Center’s ‘Out of Doors’ and have performed across the USA, France, and were one of the last bands to complete an embassy-sponsored tour of Russia in 2020. Their recordings can be found on some of the most iconic independent music labels out of New York and Los Angeles, including Barbès Records, Daptone Records, and the recently revitalized historic Latin label Ansonia Records.

Maritzaida is a Puerto Rican vocalist who brings new life to the island’s música bohemia tradition through stripped-down, intimate performances of classic and rarely heard boleros. Accompanied by guitarist AJ Weibe, her work centers on the songs of Sylvia Rexach and Tutti Umpierre, including collaborations with Rexach’s daughter, Sharon Riley, to faithfully interpret previously unpublished compositions. Her 2024 album, Alma Adentro: La Música de Sylvia Rexach y Tutti Umpierre, released on Charlie Hunter’s SideHustle Records, was named one of the Top 20 Most Outstanding Albums in Puerto Rico by the Fundación Nacional para la Cultura Popular.
