But I’m a Cheerleader – Carolina Classic Movie

Megan (Natasha Lyonne) is a model high school student—bright, popular, and dating the star football player. But when her parents suspect she might be gay, they send her to True Directions, a hilariously absurd conversion therapy camp run by the strict and ultra-traditional Mary Brown (Cathy Moriarty). There, Megan meets a rebellious group of fellow “trainees” and the confident, free-spirited Graham (Clea DuVall), who challenges everything Megan thought she knew about herself. A satirical, candy-colored cult classic, But I’m a Cheerleader is a sharp, heartfelt comedy about identity, self-acceptance, and the power of love.

Also starring RuPaul, Melanie Lynskey, and Eddie Cibrian. Directed by Jamie Babbit. 1999. R. 1h 25m.

As seen on TLC’s hit show “My Big Fat Fabulous Life”, Brenda The Drag Queen is the triad’s own live-singing, shade-slinging, comedy monster. Greensboro’s reigning Green Queen, Brenda hosts shows from across the Carolinas to the islands of Mexico, and is known for her standup comedy style and hilarious parodies.

Known as “The Gams of North Carolina”, Malayia has been entertaining audiences across the Carolinas and beyond for more than two decades. Malayia holds many prestigious titles, including Miss Gay United States, Miss Gay Latina Asheville, and North Carolina Entertainer of the Year.

Known as “The Showgirl of the South”, Dana St James is one of the original house cast members at Legends Nightclub in Raleigh. She is also the first Miss Legends and has been a professional female impersonator for decades. Dana has traveled across the country, holding titles like Miss NC USofA and Miss World.
