In 2022, Earth is overpopulated and totally polluted; the natural resources have been exhausted and the nourishment of the population is provided by Soylent Industries, a company that makes a food consisting of plankton from the oceans. In New York City, when Soylent’s member of the board William R. Simonson (Joseph Cotton) is seemingly murdered by a burglar, Detective Thorn (Charlton Heston) is assigned to investigate the case with his partner Solomon “Sol” Roth (Edward G. Robinson). Thorn goes to Simonson’s fancy apartment and meets his bodyguard Tab (Chuck Connors) and his rented “furniture” woman Shirl (Leigh Taylor-Young). The detective concludes that the executive was not actually a victim of burglary, and that powerful men want to disrupt his investigation to cover up a disturbing secret about the ingredients of Soylent Green. Directed by Richard Fleischer. 1973. Rated PG. 1 hour, 37 minutes.
