Opera at The Carolina February 5, 9:30 am
Over 6,000 Guilford County Schools (GCS) 5th grade students attend “Opera at the Carolina.” Six performances are given in a 3-day period (2 performances each morning) of an age-appropriate operas. “Opera at the Carolina” provides a live theatrical/musical experience that many students will not receive otherwise. Character education is of great concern to the GCS, and each year’s production seeks to incorporate a moral, in addition to entertaining the students. For instance, “Beauty and the Beast” taught students to look for inward beauty and not to judge others by outward appearance. The words of the operas are projected above the stage with supertitles, adding to the audience’s enjoyment and understanding. “Write Your Own Opera” began in 2011, in which students in 4th grade (rising 5th graders) submit a short story as a creative writing exercise. The winning story is turned into an opera, which is then seen by its author and all 6,000 5th graders.
