City of God

Join us for our 11th Annual Summer Film Festival, this year in The Crown, on the third floor of the theatre!

Our auditorium is closed for renovations this summer – to learn more, read about our Capital Campaign.

Based on a true story and set in a notorious slum of Rio de Janeiro – “ City of God” – this award-winning film chronicles the paths of children coming of age on the streets of 1960s Brazil.  The rise and fall of one of the city’s most notorious bosses, Li’l Ze (Leandro Firmino) is told through the eyes of a poor young fisherman’s son, Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues). As war wages on the streets, Rocket’s  only way out of a violent life is to expose the brutality of the slums to the world, using his only passion: photography. Directed by Fernando Meirelles, Kátia Lund. 2002. Rated R. 2 hours, 10 minutes.
