Stormy Weather - Carolina Classic Movie February 15, 7:00 pm
Before purchasing tickets, please familiarize yourself with our current COVID-19 policies listed below
Bill Williamson, a struggling performer, meets a beautiful vocalist named Selina Rogers. Bill promises her that they will be together after he becomes a success, but he and Selina both skyrocket to fame and lose contact on the way. Fortunately, Bill just might get one more chance to woo Selina at a huge musical stage show. Popular entertainers of the 1940s, including Fats Waller and Cab Calloway, perform as themselves in the film.
This anthology of spectacular performances is a trip down memory lane featuring celebrated dancers, comedians, and musicians, including Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Lena Horne, Fats Waller, the Nicholas Brothers, and Cab Calloway, a big-screen presence from the first days of sound. Stormy Weather was one of two films made in 1943 with all-black casts, and it was Bojangles’s final film; he died in 1949.
Please note that the movie includes a skit performed in blackface by the African-American comedy duo Flournoy Miller and Johnny Lee, which may be disturbing to viewers today, but it is also a reminder of the complicated history of minstrel performance in American entertainment.
Directed by Andrew L. Stone. Starring Bill Robinson, Lena Horne, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, and many more, 1943. Rated NR. 1 hour, 18 minutes.
